In today’s work environments and life, which involve constant get-it-done projects, drive & push through, hugely diverse and collaborative work teams, with comparison at every opportunity — it can be extremely easy to get caught up in those around you.

We all do it: scrolling through social media, watching our peers hit hugely important milestones, switching roles to better their career, and some even launching their own passion projects.

Unknowingly, sometimes this can lead to us feeling like we are not progressing at the rate we should be, wondering:

Why am I not as successful?
Why don’t I have the self-confidence to put myself out there?
Why them and not me?

The truth, from my perspective: Stop the comparison. Focus on you — your strengths, your goals, your values, and above all else your well-being. Be the engine of change for yourself and stop looking at others and comparing yourself to their journeys.

You are unique, the only one — embrace it and own it.

What’s Important

1. What is the only constant in your career? Simply put: You

Our career is expansive, over decades — it is long and rewarding when embraced. We change companies, managers, roles, or even career paths entirely as the world around us evolves.

The constant in all of this is you. It’s your career, which is why we should stop focusing on others and comparison, and switch this focus to a path which aims to meet your goals, aspirations, who you are, and fits around your lifestyle while maintaining a healthy balance.

Understanding:

  • Your values

  • What brings you joy

  • What doesn’t

  • What success looks like for you

…is truly rewarding. When you set out to focus on you, you begin to make the moves down paths that meet these expectations — leading to a more fulfilling life and career.

2. Seek Clarity – Focus Internally, Not Externally

While we all fall into the comparison trap,

Why did they get the promotion and I didn’t? Why do they get the opportunities? — this external focus can lead to imposter syndrome, spiralling into false narratives.

Change the narrative by focusing on you

Ask yourself:

  • What do your core values look like and what do they mean to you?

  • What are your strengths? How do you develop them?

  • What brings out the best in you?

  • What’s your goal? Where do you see yourself?

  • Who can support you to meet these goals?

Asking reflective, open questions helps you find the answers. Working with a coach can support you to move forward positively.

Simply though, “It all starts with you.”

What’s an open question?
It’s a question that requires more than a yes or no — it helps unlock insights and clarity into what you’re looking for.

3. Stay Grounded: Build Your Resilience

We all face challenges — but focusing on you will support you to stay grounded and not spiral.

If you invest in you and stay invested:

  • You understand what drives, motivates, and inspires you.

  • You are better equipped for setbacks.

  • You can reframe difficulties and navigate the moment without losing sight of your long-term success path.

Remember:
Key to this is solid resilience — know when to change direction, pause, breathe, and drive to meet your goals based on you, and nothing else.

4. Personal & Professional Development – These Are Linked

I used to believe these were separate, but through my own journey I’ve realised they are deeply connected.

Focusing on both together can create dramatic effects in your:

  • Career

  • Personal growth

Investing in my own growth as a human being has led to huge shifts in my sense of balance and what my true goals are.

Skills I’ve developed:

  • Active listening

  • Building confidence

  • Improving communication

  • Managing stress by making time for me

Focusing on you is a strategic investment, not selfish.
Find the balance and invest as much in you as you do in others.

“I am at my best when I am good — this supports me in being better placed to support others.”

5. When Am I at My Best?

In the get-it-done attitude of today’s world, don’t forget balance, well-being, and development.

Know your:

  • Boundaries

  • Needs

  • Best-self triggers

When you’re not right, you can’t support yourself or others effectively.
Understand what you need to be your best — and don’t let that slip.

6. What Can You Do Differently to Support This?

  • Check in regularly with yourself – How are you doing? Take your pulse.

  • Schedule regular development – Balance:

    • Internal perspective (within company)

    • External perspective (what’s happening elsewhere)

  • Balance – Do what you enjoy too, it can’t be all work.

  • Find a support – A Coach or Mentor who can support your goals.

To Recap

  • Your career spans decades – don’t rush it. Enjoy the journey.

  • As life progresses, so do your goals – the path can and should change.

  • You are at the centre of your career – find a balance that lets you be your best.

  • You own your growth – invest in you.

  • Don’t compare – reflect instead.

  • Get to know you – your values, goals, aspirations.
